This test is ideal if you're experiencing painful urination, frequent urges to pee, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, or pelvic discomfort. It helps identify whether you have a urinary tract infection and what bacteria might be causing it, so your doctor can prescribe the right treatment. Many people use this test when they suspect a UTI or have recurring infections that need proper diagnosis.
A morning specimen is preferred for the most accurate results. Due to collection instructions, the urine culture should not be collected at the same time as a Chlamydia/Gonorrhea specimen, so if you need both tests, plan to collect them separately. Follow the collection instructions carefully to avoid contamination, and stay hydrated but avoid excessive fluids right before collection.
This panel includes a complete urinalysis that checks for infection markers like white blood cells, bacteria, nitrites, and blood in your urine, which indicate inflammation or infection. It also includes a urine culture that identifies the specific bacteria causing your infection and determines which antibiotics will work best to treat it. Together, these tests provide a comprehensive picture of your urinary tract health and guide effective treatment decisions.
What this means
Your urine culture came back positive, meaning bacteria were detected in your urinary tract. This confirms a urinary tract infection that will likely require antibiotic treatment prescribed by your healthcare provider based on the specific bacteria identified.
Recommended actions
Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help flush bacteria from your system
Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods that can irritate your bladder
Urinate frequently and don't hold it in, especially after sexual activity
Follow up with your doctor to get appropriate antibiotic treatment based on culture results
